Though the church officially declined to adopt a manual, leaders from time to time gathered together in book or booklet form the generally accepted rules of church life. Perhaps the most impressive was a 184-page book published in 1907 by pioneer J. N. Loughborough entitled “The Church, Its Organization, Order and Discipline,” which dealt with many of the topics now covered by this Church Manual.     FL 05 05 Religious Liberty Religious liberty includes the fundamental human right to have, adopt, or change one's religion or religious belief according to conscience and to manifest and practice one's religion individually or in fellowship with other believers, in prayer, devotions, witness, and teaching, including the observance of a weekly day of rest and worship in harmony with the precepts of one's religion, subject to respect for the equivalent rights of others. In so doing, the Public Affairs and Religious Liberty Department is involved in government relations, inter-church contacts and, where indicated, networks with non-governmental organizations which have kindred goals in upholding religious freedom. The department not only works for the religious liberties of both individual church members and organized entities of the Church, but also supports the rightful religious liberties of all people. God accepts homage and worship only when they are freely given. While all human rights are of great importance, religious liberty is unique and of special significance. It deals not only with the inter-human dimension, but with a person's relationship with God, the Creator. Seventh-day Adventists therefore view religious liberty as the primordial human right that undergirds all human rights. The Public Affairs and Religious Liberty Department encourages, where feasible, such separation. The Public Affairs and Religious Liberty Department also believes that the union of church and state is a sure formula for discrimination and intolerance and offers a fertile soil for the spread of persecution.

    The Public Affairs and Religious Liberty Department develops, jointly with the various English-speaking divisions, policies for the financial support and circulation of this English language religious liberty journal. FL 25 Religious Liberty Litigation In various countries it may become necessary from time to time to take legal action in defense of the religious liberty rights of church organizations or individuals, including the right of Sabbath observance. However, before resorting to the courts, every effort should be made to settle matters equitably in support of free exercise of religion. Prudence should always prevail when it appears advisable to seek rights or redress through the judicial system, not the least because of the heavy costs that can be incurred and the possible far-reaching consequences of court decisions. When interdivision work brings us in contact with other Christian societies and religious bodies, the spirit of Christian courtesy, frankness, and fairness shall prevail at all times. We recognize that true religion is based on conscience and conviction. It is therefore to be our constant purpose that no selfish interest or temporal advantage shall draw any person to our communion and that no tie shall hold any member save the belief and conviction that in this way the true connection with Christ is found.

    If a change of conviction leads a member of our church to feel no longer in harmony with Seventh-day Adventist faith and practice, we recognize not only the right but also the responsibility of that member to change, without opprobrium, religious affiliation in accord with belief. We expect other religious bodies to respond in the same spirit of religious liberty. Before admitting to church membership members of other religious organizations, care shall be exercised to ascertain that the candidates are moved to change their religious affiliation by religious conviction and out of regard to their personal relationship with God. A person under censure of another religious organization for clearly established fault in Christian morals or character shall not be considered eligible for membership in the Seventh-day Adventist Church until there is evidence of repentance and reformation. The Seventh-day Adventist Church is unable to confine its mission to restricted geographical areas because of its understanding of the gospel commission's mandate. In the providence of God and the historical development of His work for men, denominational bodies and religious movements have arisen from time to time to give special emphasis to different phases of gospel truth. In the origin and rise of the Seventh-day Adventist people, the burden was laid upon us to emphasize the gospel of Christ's second coming as an imminent event, calling for the proclamation of Biblical truths in the setting of the special message of preparation as described in Bible prophecy, particularly in Revelation 14:6-14. Any restriction which limits witness to specified geographical areas therefore becomes an abridgment of the gospel commission. The Seventh-day Adventist Church also acknowledges the rights of other religious persuasions to operate without geographic restrictions.

    As other reviewers have commented, the text could greatly benefit from an appendix where the metric lab (Exercise 1) could be moved, as this information could easily be incorporated into other labs (like Exercise 2, Microscopy). The text has a table of contents instead of an index or glossary, although some of the labs provide short glossaries of the relevant terms for that particular lab. As discussed later in this review, a list of materials or an instructor’s preparation guide is also missing and would be very helpful for using this text in the classroom. Exercise 2 on Microscopy states that microscopes use light rays as energy.but although light rays are used to view objects, the light rays do not use these as a source of energy; and page 60 refers to Fragile X syndrome as “taking its name from the appearance of the X chromosome,” but does not explain why (it is due to the specific mutation). There are other areas where the text could use additional background and context for student understanding. One date is referred to in Exercise 13, but will remain relevant for some time to come. This could also easily be updated, and there were no other areas within the text that would make it obsolete within a short period of time, and even in areas where the science is changing (i.e. the Kingdom Protista), the information and activities as presented, will remain helpful and easily updatable.Providing additional background information also would help with the modularity of the book - many of the labs could be easily rearranged but would require additional background for terms used within the activities.Some of the units had more helpful background information in the Introduction or activities, whereas some of the other units did not have as much.

    Other small inconsistencies include that some activities are labeled with letters, others are not; some units have materials lists but not all; some tables have table numbers while others do not; and the first unit refers to a “homework assignment” but the rest don’t (Exercise 13 describes the lab questions as a homework assignment, but in Exercise 1 it is separate and not a part of the text). The text also repeats the Safety Procedures on pages ii and iv, presumably so that a student can print it and sign it, but also keep a copy for themselves; however, it would be nice to exchange the two so that a student could tear out the page they sign and still print the rest of the lab double-sided. My non-majors lecture course is divided into themes that cover the content, and this text worked easily with that structure since I was able to pull out several labs and modify them slightly to fit my own reorganization of the content. It would also help significantly if it could be made available in a word document so that instead of a.pdf in case modifications are needed or desired (even as far as small details like spelling errors or lines like “pick up the homework assignment,” etc.). Additionally, microscopy and identification of cell types usually takes place after an examination or discussion of cells, and the Scientific Method is traditionally taught before microscopy (or next to other labs where microscopy is used). For example, Table 5.1 has a column titled, “check if sugar is resent” (I think they meant present). Other tables have extra rows that can create confusion (page 44); or graphs that do not include units of measurement (page 48; the graph also shows “Km” but does not define it, and then asks students about mM for Figure C). Page 86 (Exercise 12) asks students to fill in Table 14.4, and page 99 refers to Section 14.3, neither of which exist within the book.

    Likewise, in Exercise 2, the microscopy unit, it refers students to the “student identification guide” that also isn’t present in the book. It would help significantly if the text had an instructor’s manual available or even a description on where to find some of the materials, make certain solutions, or determine amounts of materials mentioned in the labs. Alternatively, even a consistent list at the beginning of each lab or section with the required materials for the students that could serve as a prep list for the instructor would be helpful - this is available in some of the labs, but not all of them.There are small inconsistencies, like using acronyms before defining them, although most of these are well-known acronyms and most errors are not egregious enough to decrease the rating of 5 that I gave this text. There are also a few punctuation inconsistencies, as well as spelling errors (i.e. page 2; millimeter is missing an “l” and micrometer is missing an “r”), grammar errors, and some incomplete sentences throughout. While the language and activities primarily stay objective in most labs, the only identifiable item in the text was in Exercise 1 on metric measurement, where it asks “Could a normal person be 3 meters tall?” (page 4). Many of the exercises were slight variations of ones I have seen available, but a few were new and interesting and I appreciated the change. While there is room for improvement (as in all texts!), this text provides a great resource and useful framework for an interesting, mostly inquiry-driven non-majors biology course that is relevant and easy to use for students. For the microscopy unit, the microscope nosepiece can sometimes have more than three objective lenses. Unit 7, photosynthesis, was well-put. However, there is room for improving accuracy. For example, in “The breaking of the water molecules releases energy that is stored as ATP and NADPH and oxygen is released as a bi-product”, energy stored in ATP and NADPH is not from breaking the water molecule, rather it is from the captured light energy (by chlorophyll) that energizes the electrons which then power the synthesis of ATP and NADPH.Some examples of applying concepts to everyday life were provided such as applying the concept of catalase interaction with hydrogen peroxide when healing wounds. However, there are cases when clarification is necessary. For example in Unit 9, the unit jumps into concepts without proper or enough introduction such as phenotypes, dominance, homozygous, genotype. Other suggestions exist but no room to be included in this review.There is minimal risk in re-arranging the content except for maybe microscopy. Instead, it can be included as an appendix, or assigned as a video such as the video suggested on page 19 for the scientific method exercise.

Images should be included that would facilitate the making of sets of these cards for the class exercise. For example, the manual states that light microscopes “use light rays as an energy source” when in fact the light rays are used to enable one to visualize the image while electricity powers the light microscope. The text also indicates that the coarse focus adjustment knob of a microscope should only be used when the scanning lens is in position, but in reality it can be used when the low power lens is in position as well.

    So, shen I decided to go for the General Class License, I went with ARRL, an organization I knew from my youth as technically sound and no-nonsense. I was not disappointed. The material was presented in an orderly, well-thought-out manner with periodic references to the relevant test questions (which the FCC publishes freely). This was in contrast to the previous book, which walked through all the questions inserting bits of background material between. I was pleased that the Kindle Edition enabled one to link to the questions and then easily return to the correct spot in the text. ARRL also supplies significant supplementary material on their web site. There is one caveat: The supplementary material includes an errata sheet, which one would do well to find right away. I found it after discovering an error I one example problem.I've supplemented practice with an iPad app that quizzes me on a random selection of 35 questions. After a few runs of the app, I've identified areas where I need to bone up and have done so with the book. Although this edition of the book is for the question bank that begins July 1st, the basic principles have not changed materially from the soon-to-expire exam. I'm pretty confident I'm going to pass the exam on Monday without a problem. On that metric -- helping me with the test -- this book is fine. I am less enthusiastic about over-presentation of material that distracts from clarity of understanding. For example, in the front of the book (1-2, repeated half-size on 3-7) is a Frequency Allocation Chart (also available on their web site) with a diagram of the bands, frequencies and modes. Because it's the generic diagram, it includes a lot of superfluous information such as the restrictions for Novice and Advanced licenses -- both deprecated in 2000 (15 years ago!) -- as well as changes enacted a couple of years ago. As a result, the chart is dense and less useful than it could be in this setting.

    I copied and then went through the pool of test questions included in the back of each book with a highlighter. Blue for the questions I 100% knew, green for the questions that I got with a little intuition (guessing not allowed), and yellow for the questions I did not understand. Each question in the pool has the section and page number listed making it easy to refer back to the section for further study. I also took the practice tests on the ARRL and the AA9PW dot com web sites.I recommend both. This book contains a lot of relevant information missing in the West book. With this book, you have read the whole thing and try to remember as much as possible. I am reading it one chapter at a time, and reviewing that chapter.But it works. When I finish the book, I will start reviewing for the test. For that I will use Gordon West. He presents each of the 350 questions, gives the answer, and a brief explanation. This is a simple and effective method. The ARRL manual describes the background information for each section, but the concepts are not in the order found on the test, making it difficult to find the questions in the bank of 350. Both are superb books, and I recommend both, and some on-line work. It would be hard to fail the test if you use both books diligently. Good Luck and have fun.I mean I passed my test on the first go. I thought that the electronics section could have been a little more clear but it was sufficient for me, a person who doesn't have a strong electronics background. Yes, the ARRL manual reads like a text book, but with my college experience I just used the method of highlighting and page marking that helped me through school. If you want to just look at the questions and memorize answers then there are much cheaper books to buy, but again I didn't focus on pure memorization to pass the test.As I have significant electronics background, I found it’s chatty, overly enthusiastic style rather off-putting.

A whole bunch of general information with the test questions buried inside.I recently started studying for my Extra but felt the need to re-group and buy the General Class License Manual to grasp a better foundation. While the General Class license manual provides an understanding related to the questions.I supplemented my studies with Dave Casler's videos, KE0OG, which together provided greater context and understanding of the principles and practices I was seeking. Do both and I feel you'll find yourself that much more educated.The General Class is the second step of three. Concise, to the point study material. Everything one needs to pass the General Class test. ARRL has made sure the information is complete and study guides in the book and online will help the individual study and prepare the needed math skill for the test. With the extra room, they could add supplemental information relevant to several of the questions on the exam: power restrictions, sideband use, and relative position of data vs voice.This is the one. There is really no alternative. However, if you are going to spend thousands in this hobby most likely, get yourself 2 books to prep for the test. I highly recommend you buy Gordon West's book as well. I read Gordon's first, then the ARRL manual for the detailed theory, and about a week before the test I switch back to Gordon's book and review for the test. The ARRL manual is really the only book you need, but after you've read it a few times and you want to make sure you are going to pass your test, that's where Gordon's book really shines.
